In common terms, Geomatics activities are performed by a range of experts commonly known as Land Surveyors, Engineering Surveyors, Geographic Information Science (GISc) Practitioners, Photogrammetric Surveyors, Hydrographic Surveyors and Mine Surveyors.

 

Geomatics and the Geomatics profession are areas of expertise, as defined by the Geomatics Profession Act 19 or 2013, which involve one or more of the following activities which may occur on, above or below the surface of the land or the sea:-

The determination of the size and shape of the earth and the measurement and recording of all data needed to define the size, position, shape and contour of any part of the earth; the spatial positioning of objects and the positioning and monitoring of physical features, structures and engineering works; the planning and determination of the position of the boundaries of land and of rights in land, for the purposes of registration of such land and rights in terms of applicable legislation; the design, establishment and administration of geographic information systems and the collection, storage, analysis, visualisation and management of geo-spatial information; the measurement of land, mineral and marine resources; and such other activity as may be prescribed.
